United Hospital Center uses Honeywell handhelds for safe and accurate evacuation process

On November 4, 2010, UHC (Bridgeport, W.Va.) simulated an emergency evacuation, tracking 25 patients in transit to different hospitals across four checkpoints. At each checkpoint, the Honeywell Dolphin 9900hc mobile computer with eMET was used to scan and track patient wristbands, and monitor patient conditions and medication schedules.

Xerox survey: Patients unsure about EHRs cite security as top concern

In a recent online survey conducted among 2,720 U.S. adults, nearly 80 percent of respondents who have concerns about digital medical records indicated stolen personal information by a computer hacker to be their number one worry, followed by the threat of lost, damaged or corrupted records at 64 percent and the misuse of information at 62 percent.

Report: Customers ready to pay more for customized health plans

Almost half of insurance customers would be willing to pay more for health insurance that caters to their needs, according to a new report from the consulting firm Accenture. And nearly 80 percent said they expected customer service to be easier and more convenient. The firm surveyed 1,000 insured people.

Home caregivers' unpaid labor worth $450 billion, AARP finds

Collectively, about 62 million American adults – one in four – were involved in caring for another adult for some period of time during 2009 and 42 million provided year-round care, according to an AARP report issued last week. Based on surveys by AARP, the National Alliance of Caregivers and the federal government, the estimated value of those volunteers' services was $450 billion in 2009. In comparison, Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance spend about $150 billion on formal long-term care in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and home care.
