Medicare and Medicaid

Nominee to head Medicare viewed as a pragmatist

Last Wednesday, the White House nominated Marilyn Tavenner, a pediatrician, to run the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The announcement was made at nearly the same time that the center’s current head, Donald M. Berwick, submitted his resignation. Berwick will leave his post in December. Tavenner was named Medicare's principle deputy administrator in Feb. 2010.

Health IT and patient safety: Building safer systems for better care

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to evaluate health IT safety concerns and recommend ways that both government and the private sector can make patient care safer using health IT. In a new report, the IOM finds that safe use of health IT relies on several factors, clinicians and patients among them. The IOM's recommendations include improving transparency in the reporting of health IT safety incidents and enhancing monitoring of health IT products.

Meaningful Use

Report confirms increase in hospitals expected to achieve meaningful use

When it comes to meeting Stage 1 of meaningful use, new research from HIMSS Analytics reported a 16 percent increase, from 25 to 41 percent in the seven months from February to September 2011, in hospitals being well positioned to meet Stage 1 of meaningful use.
